New SVD based initialization strategy for non-negative matrix factorization

چکیده
There are two problems need to be dealt with for Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF): choose a suitable rank of the factorization and provide a good initialization method for NMF algorithms. This paper aims to solve these two problems using Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). At first we extract the number of main components as the rank, actually this method is inspired from [1, 2]. Second, we use the singular value and its vectors to initialize NMF algorithm. In 2008, Boutsidis and Gollopoulos [3] provided the method titled NNDSVD to enhance initialization of NMF algorithms. They extracted the positive section and respective singular triplet information of the unit matrices {C( }j=1 which were obtained from singular vector pairs. This strategy aims to use positive section to cope with negative elements of the singular vectors, but in experiments we found that even replacing negative elements by their absolute values could get better results than NNDSVD. Hence, we give another method based SVD to fulfil initialization for NMF algorithms (SVD-NMF). Numerical experiments on two face databases ORL and YALE [4, 5] show that our method is better than NNDSVD.

Complex SVD Initialization for NMF Source Separation on Audio Spectrograms
Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is an approximative low-rank matrix factorization which is frequently applied for source separation of audio signals (see e.g. [1]). The quality of source separation algorithms using NMF strongly depends on the initialization of the NMF. Very often, random values are used for initialization. Several other initialization strategies have been developed, with...
متن کاملSVD based initialization: A head start for nonnegative matrix factorization
We describe Nonnegative Double Singular Value Decomposition (NNDSVD), a new method designed to enhance the initialization stage of nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF). NNDSVD can readily be combined with existing NMF algorithms. The basic algorithm contains no randomization and is based on two SVD processes, one approximating the data matrix, the other approximating positive sections of the ...
متن کاملIterative Weighted Non-smooth Non-negative Matrix Factorization for Face Recognition
Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is a part-based image representation method. It comes from the intuitive idea that entire face image can be constructed by combining several parts. In this paper, we propose a framework for face recognition by finding localized, part-based representations, denoted “Iterative weighted non-smooth non-negative matrix factorization” (IWNS-NMF). A new cost fun...
متن کاملNew Bases for Polynomial-Based Spaces
Since it is well-known that the Vandermonde matrix is ill-conditioned, while the interpolation itself is not unstable in function space, this paper surveys the choices of other new bases. These bases are data-dependent and are categorized into discretely l2-orthonormal and continuously L2-orthonormal bases. The first one construct a unitary Gramian matrix in the space l2(X) while the late...
